PR1: Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo
Plan the full Madeira PR1 ridge walk between Madeira's highest peaks, from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, including permits and return logistics
PR1 is Madeira's iconic high-mountain ridge walk: a dramatic route from Pico do Arieiro towards Pico Ruivo, then down to Achada do Teixeira for the practical one-way finish. Expect huge views, Pedra Rija, often known as the "Stairway to Heaven" viewpoint, rock staircases, exposed sections and fast-changing mountain weather. It is a serious walk, not a quick viewpoint stop, and guests are expected to have the minimum fitness to walk it in about 3h30.
The full day is longer than the headline ridge section. The PR1 section between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo is about 6.1 km, and the descent to Achada do Teixeira adds roughly another 2.8 km, making the walked route about 9 km overall. Plan food, water, layers, sun protection and enough energy for the ascent to the summit and the descent afterwards.
Treat PR1 as an independent mountain walk only if you are comfortable solving permits, route status, parking or transfer, weather judgement and the one-way finish yourself. A guided option with transfer is useful if you want pickup, PR1 permit reservation and return logistics handled for you, with a guide making the final call when cloud, wind, visibility or group safety changes the plan. Nature Meetings' guided Peaks Walk follows this full route when conditions allow; guests use accommodation or agreed pickup points and pay the €10.50 PR1 permit to the guide on the day. If conditions do not allow the walk to be done safely, the day normally switches to an alternative walk such as Larano.
