PR1: Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo
Plan Madeira PR1 from Pico do Areeiro with the current partial/full route choice and SIMplifica payment
PR1 is Madeira's iconic high-mountain ridge walk: a dramatic route from Pico do Areeiro towards Pico Ruivo, with Pedra Rija, often known as the "Stairway to Heaven" viewpoint, rock staircases, exposed sections and fast-changing mountain weather. Current official access presents two choices: the shorter Pico do Areeiro to Pedra Rija Viewpoint section as an out-and-back route, or the full Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo route as one-way from Pedra Rija onwards.
The full Nature Meetings Peaks Walk is designed as a longer mountain day when the route, weather and safety controls allow it: Pico do Areeiro towards Pico Ruivo, then down to Achada do Teixeira for the practical one-way finish. The official PR1 section between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo is about 6.1 km, while Nature Meetings lists its guided Peaks Walk as an 11 km full-day walk.
Treat PR1 as an independent mountain walk only if you are comfortable solving route status, SIMplifica payment, parking or transfer, weather judgement and the one-way finish yourself. A guided option with transfer is useful if you want pickup, permit/payment handling and return logistics managed for you, with a guide making the final call when official access, cloud, wind, visibility or group safety changes the plan. If PR1 cannot be done safely or lawfully, the day normally switches to an alternative walk such as Larano.
