Abingdon, Oxfordshire

Science & history of Culham, Sutton Courtenay & Milton Park

🕒 Mid morning, Lunchtime

Afternoon cycle with the history of villages around Abingdon. Includes food trucks half way, and finishing in Abingdon for cake by the river

Science & history of Culham, Sutton Courtenay & Milton Park

Starting in Abingdon, we first head to Culham village where we will learn about battles that took place during the English Civil War.

We then cross the River Thames, and investigate a pill box from World War 2, part of the GHQ red line defences. Then we visit Sutton Courtenay with fascinating local industry including the former Prime Minister Herbert Henry Asquith, and the burial place of George Orwell.

Continuing on to Milton Park, we visit the hottest place in the Solar System before stopping at some local food trucks for a bite to eat, and a craft beer brewery where you can buy beers for later.

Heading back towards Abingdon we take the old train track, pass the marina, and back to Abingdon where we finally have a bite of cake by the river.

Culham village

A small, quiet, and unremarkable village. One noteworthy remark is that unusually Culham is a shrunken village, meaning smaller now than it was years ago. This is perhaps due to the Black Death pandemic of 1346 to 1352
